On April 29, 2006, ACLU lawyer, Ellen Simon announced her candidacy for Congress, with Gary Hart, a formerly disgraced Colorado Senator at her side. Simon seems to be making a practice of surrounding herself with dishonorable people. In addition to the former senator, who was exposed for having an adulterous relationship with a younger woman during his candidacy for President, Ms. Simon is married to Blaine Tanner, one of the most notorious deadbeat dads of all time. Interestingly enough, Blaine Tanner was living in the posh suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio on a $5,400-a-month salary with none other than wife Ellen Simon while he hadn't paid a penny to his ex-wife and 3 kids in nine years. The former Brampton, Ontario millionaire was more than $500,000 in arrears to his ex-wife and 3 children, two of whom were disabled, when he was ordered by an Ontario judge to pay $1,900 a month on an interim basis until a final ruling was made in his case. Tanner moved to Ohio after marrying the Cleveland civil rights lawyer Ellen Simon in December, 1997. Despite living in a stately Georgian-style house and driving a $50,000 Volvo, Tanner cried poverty and claimed he was completely dependent on Simon for financial support. The story doesn't stop there! Tanner returned to Canada in 1994 to begin serving a six-month sentence for tax evasion. He was also ordered to pay a $100,000 fine or face another six months in jail. After pleading guilty to evading $360,000+ in income tax in connection with $1.3 million in federal tax credits, Tanner served just two months of his six-month sentence. Justice officials in Canada wanted to know why Tanner, who was sentenced to six months in jail and a $100,000 fine in 1994, wasn't jailed for an additional six months when he didn't pay. Rural Arizona doesn't need representative's like Ellen Simon who apparently surround themselves with people of dubious moral character. Rural Arizona needs and wants a representative with strong moral values, who will fight for this district and this country. Ellen Simon is quite the contrast to Rick Renzi, the family man fighting for his district and his country. In response to liberal Cleveland trial lawyer Ellen Simon's announced candidacy for Arizona's 1st District seat in the House of Representatives in 2006, Arizona Republican Party Chairman Matt Salmon issued the following statement: "Given her record as a supporter of the far left-wing agenda, Ellen Simon is completely out of touch with the mainstream in rural Arizona. An ACLU trial lawyer and supporter of Hillary Clinton does not share the values of Arizona families. Clearly, the Democrats must really be running out of candidates if they have to recruit a Cleveland ACLU trial lawyer. Even Ted Danson would be better than Ellen Simon. "As president of the Cleveland chapter of the ACLU, Simon led an organization that puts criminals before victims, opposes the individual's right to bear arms, and wants to deny a parent the right to know if their underage daughter is going to have an abortion. "Residents of the 1st District believe in affordable healthcare and lower taxes, and want to win the War on Terrorism. How much does Ellen Simon have in common with rural Arizona? Nothing."
