The Promontory Fire started early Sunday morning north of the Town of Christopher Creek and spread to the top of the Mogollon Rim by Sunday evening. Firefighters and bulldozers from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest were able to seal off the top of the Rim to prevent the fire's spread to the north. Approximately 80 firefighters and three helicopters are assigned to the fire today. They will work to box the fire in on the east, west and southern flanks using roads, trails and natural terrain features to box it in. Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it was human caused. This has prompted fire officials to emphasize that people must be careful with fire in the forest at all times, even in the winter months.
