Chicago Murder Suspect Arrested in Phoenix by United States Marshals

Phoenix, AZ Elijah M. Stewart (DOB 2/16/85) was arrested on the afternoon of February 7 while eating strawberry Belgium waffles at the International House of Pancakes located at 19th Avenue and Bell Road. Stewart was arrested by the Phoenix High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force, who had received information from Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force in Chicago. Stewart has been wanted by the Illinois authorities since August 2005, when the Chicago Police Department secured an arrest warrant charging him with murder. Because of his charges, Stewart was considered armed and dangerous. His criminal history includes arrests for assault and battery, and robbery. Stewart was transported to the 4th Avenue jail, awaiting extradition to Illinois. United States Marshal David Gonzales said, ". . . with the arrests of Stewart and two other violent felons who tried to use Phoenix as a refuge, our Task Force arrests are a prime example of nationwide cooperation between law enforcement entities. "The HIDTA Task Force is comprised of Deputy United States Marshals, Officers of the Department of Public Safety and Officers of the Maricopa County Adult Probation Department.
